Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are additional protection components designed for high-voltage applications in order to protect insulation from overvoltages. They are used to limit/reduce the overvoltage to a safe level, and are often installed in parallel to a transformer, load, or between two high voltage systems. SL1021B250X is a GDT which possesses the capability to ground any form of overvoltage which might occur and can also release its stored energy without permanent damage.

SL1021B250X is a type of gas discharge arresters, designed for surge current surge protection in communication and distribution networks. It is mainly used in AC 50Hz joint line or transformer to reduce voltage surges. It has a rated voltage of 220V, with a maximum operating voltage of 250V (Line-Earth) and a maximum discharge current of 2.5KA. It is designed with the dimensions 8.5L × 5.0W × 2.5H (mm).

The working principle of SL1021B250X is based on the ability of its gas to break down like a reverse biased diode and dissipate the surge currents. It consists of three main components: an electron emitter, a velocity suppressor and a spark gap. The electron emitter is made of a halogen-filled ceramic tube filled with a gas mixture of air, nitrogen and argon or, alternatively, nitrogen and ozone. Such a gas-filled tube, known as a gas discharge tube (GDT), consists of two electrodes manufactured from nickel or copper, and surrounded by a conductive mantle. One of the electrodes, the cathode, is connected to the ground, while the other, the anode, is connected to a metallic spark gap.

The spark gap is an opened metallic tube which is filled with gas and equipped with electrodes. When the electric field between the electrodes is strong enough, the electrons from the environment are attracted and start to flow into the spark gap. When the voltage is sufficient, an arc is created and the electrons start to flow through it, creating a path of low resistance between the gap and the ground. This is the main principle which is used to protect the system when a transient voltage occurs.

The suppressor has the function of slowing down or reducing the intensity of the voltage surges before they reach the spark gap. This is achieved by increasing the number of electrons rescued from the environment and by limiting the velocity of these electrons when it reaches the spark gap. The suppressor is a ceramic tube filled with the same gas mixture of nitrogen, oxygen and airs as the GDT. The suppressor is placed between the spark gap and the GDT, which increases the electric field and thus slowing the electrons down.

SL1021B250X is used in applications such as protection of communication terminals, power lines and distribution transformers. It utilizes its three components, which work together to achieve the desired surge protection for an installation. When a surge occurs, the suppressor will slow the electrons down before they reach the spark gap, and the spark gap will create a low resistance between the anode and the ground in order to dissipate the surge to the ground safely. The GDT also helps to limit the overvoltage and provides insulation between the two high voltage systems.
