A Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) is a form of electrical protection device, usually in the form of a tube containing a gas, and it is used in a variety of electrical applications. The SL1021B450C GDT is designed for lightning protection applications, and its working principle is simple. When a lightning strike causes a current surge, the GDT is designed to trigger and release the energy in the form of a spark to protect relays, transformers, motors, and other electrical components from the surge.

When an electrical current surge occurs, a spark is created between the two electrodes, releasing the energy to prevent the surge from affecting the protected equipment.
When an electrical current is applied to the GDT, the gas within the tube is ionized and a spark is created, generating a voltage between the two electrodes. This is known as the “breakdown” voltage and it occurs at a very low voltage, usually below a tenth of a volt. The spark will continue for a few microseconds, with a visible corona at the spark gap. A GDT is designed to continue the spark across the gap until all of the surge energy has been dissipated.
The SL1021B450C GDT also has a “recovery” voltage. When the lightning surge has been dissipated, the spark will stop, the voltage across the electrodes will drop, and the unit will return to its normal state. This is important because it prevents the unit from becoming damaged when the surge has passed.
