The SL1024A400R is an air-gap type GDT arrester. It is constructed from an 11mm diameter stainless steel tube with an insulating sleeve. In operation, the tube is filled with a pressurized nitrogen-argon mix gas and is subjected to a load voltage. As the load voltage increases, the ionization of the gas causes a current flow, which is limited by a safety gap between the tube and the insulating sleeve. This current flows through the tube, creating a self-biasing effect. If the voltage continues to increase, the ionized gas will breakdown, allowing more current to flow, and creating a spark gap between the tube and insulating sleeve. Once the spark gap has formed, the current will be further limited until the voltage returns to its normal level. The spark gap then automatically re-closes, allowing the current to flow again without damaging the arrester.

The SL1024A400R is usually used for voltage protection applications on AC power lines, telecom systems, or data communication networks. It provides overvoltage protection up to 500V peak and is rated for an impulse current of 5kA (10/350uS). The arrester is also equipped with protection against voltage transients up to 250V or 2kV peak, depending on the orientation of the arrester. The arrester is rated for a continuous operating temperature of -40 to +80 degrees Celsius, and can withstand a maximum surge current of 2kA.
