The SL23EP09SC–1HT is a high-performance clock generator, PLL (Phase-Locked Loop), and frequency synthesizer that is part of a family of integrated circuits specifically designed to provide the highest levels of performance in the most demanding and varied of environments. As such, it can be found in use all over the world in a wide range of applications such as telecommunications, aerospace, medical, industrial automation, and more.

In order to understand how this device works and understand its numerous applications, a basic understanding of clock and timing systems is required. This involves having a clear understanding of the terms frequency, period, and phase. Frequency is the rate at which a repeating event occurs and is measured in hertz (Hz). When measured in cycles per second, this is also referred to as the “recurrence rate”. The period is the length of time between each cycle and is measured in seconds. Phase, on the other hand, is the position of each cycle within a sequence and can be referred to as “phase angle”. In order for a system to have the the highest precision timing application, the cycle period, frequency, and phase should all be accurately synchronized.

The SL23EP09SC–1HT helps to achieve this accuracy by utilizing a unique design that combines multiple clock generators, PLL controllers, and frequency synthesizers all onto a single chip. It includes a range of features that make it particularly suitable for use in precision timing applications. These features include a fast lock time and tight frequency accuracy, as well as a wide operating temperature range (-40 to +150°C). The device has an output frequency range of 1.0MHz to 50MHz and features programmable frequency dividers.

The device works by using a combination of on chip oscillators, phase-lock loops (PLLs) and synchronization circuitry to generate multiple clock signals with precise frequency and phase relationships. The oscillators provide two main outputs, one high precision, low-jitter reference clock, and one dedicated crystal oscillator output. This second output can be used to generate PLLs or as a reference clock source. The PLLs then divide the reference clock input and generate multiple clock outputs with precise frequency and phase relationships. The PLLs can also be used to generate a high-frequency operating frequency from a low-frequency reference clock, by using a fractional-N architecture. The frequency synthesis circuitry of the SL23EP09SC–1HT is also programmable, allowing for a range of frequency configurations.
