The device houses a PCIE25-ALIT transceiver, which is a high-performance clock synthesis system. The transceiver helps to reduce the amount of data generated by the system and to implement clocking, timing, and synchronization techniques in a wide variety of data interfaces.

The SL28PCIE25ALIT application field mainly involves timing and clock management applications, such as telecom infrastructure, time-stamping and recording functions for video frames, and clock synchronization for automated test systems. The SL28PCIE25ALIT incorporates a programmable Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) circuit, which is used for generating wide range of clock signals from a reference input.

PLLs are commonly used to control the frequency and phase of different CPU cores, making them ideal for applications that require multiple frequencies and/or fast switching. The SL28PCIE25ALIT PLL can operate in a variety of modes, including Holdover, Impairment, and Frequency Therapy. It also features Frequency Synthesizer Modes (ASI and Xgen) and the ability to program the output frequencies of the PLL.

The SL28PCIE25ALIT also uses a multiple output (8-output) clock buffer. The buffer provides CMOS and/or LVDS compatible clock outputs from an external reference frequency or from an internal synthesized frequency.

The device also has pin-selectable output slew-rate and edge-polarity options that allow the user to customize the device for the specific application and to ensure that valid clock signals are supplied. The SL28PCIE25ALIT working principle requires that the user first select a reference clock frequency as input to the PLL. The PLL then generates an internal clock frequency that is equal to the reference clock frequency multiplied by the scaling factor. In order to achieve this, the PLL will adjust the internal loop settings of the VCO to change the output frequency.

In addition, a programmable divider called the phase frequency detector (PFD) is used to regulate the VCO frequency. The PFD measures the difference between the Input Reference Clock and the Internal Lock Clock and provides a voltage output to the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) to adjust the output frequency. This voltage output is then used to adjust the internal loop settings of the VCO which adjusts the output frequency until the reference clock and internal lock clock frequencies match.

Once the internal clock frequency is equal to the reference clock frequency multiplied by the divider value, the PLL is considered to be in lock and the output frequency of the PLL is changed through the programming of the PLL divider values. The output frequency of the PLL will be equal to the reference frequency divided by the scaling factor.

The SL28PCIE25ALIT also supports the generation of multiple frequency outputs from a single reference frequency using the Multiple Output Clock Buffer. This buffer allows up to 8 independent outputs that are each derived from the same original reference frequency. Each one has programmable edge-polarity and slew-rate options, allowing for fine adjustment of the clock buffer outputs.

The SL28PCIE25ALIT also has the ability to power down the device when not in use. This feature allows the user to conserve energy when the device is not in use and also helps to increase system reliability.
