SM6T33CAY is a high-speed and low-capacitance TVS (transient voltage suppressor) in the SMA package as protection components. It is designed to protect against environment disturbance, such as Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and electrical overstress (EOS).
Overview
The SM6T33CAY TVS diode is a so-called axial-leaded, two-terminal electronic component that applies to serially coupled application structures. The diode is housed in a SMA surface mount package and features overvoltage protection, surge capability, and low capacitance for signal speed protection.
Applications
The SM6T33CAY TVS diode offers two main utilization areas. The first one is D-Sub non-environmental applications, where it can be used as an ideal solution for Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection from an input/output, data communication, and signal lines. Such applications include computer peripherals, networking equipment, audio/video equipment, and instrumentation. Additionally, it can be also used in Military and Aerospace applications.
Working principle
The working principle of the SM6T33CAY TVS diode is based on the principle of transient voltage suppression. When the voltage across the diode exceeds its breakdown voltage, the structure levels the voltage through its inherent P-N junction. While the breakdown voltage stands for the voltage across the diode that breaks down the electric flow, the other factor, the clamping voltage, is the voltage across the diode at which the current begins to flow.
Apart from performing voltage suppression, the diode is also able to withstand transients produced by sudden current surge. As a result of an instantaneous current flow, the diode begins to exhibit electrical breakdown and thus begins to discharge the current, allowing it to reduce the voltage across the TVS diode. By lowering the voltage, it prevents further electrical surge.
