Transient voltage suppressors (TVSs), also known as voltage diodes, are devices specifically designed to protect electronics from high voltage transients. The SMA6L13A is a unidirectional, ultra-fast recovery, silicon, low-capacitance, voltage suppressor diode in a small SMA surface-mount package.
The SMA6L13A is designed to provide protection of electronic circuits against voltage transients induced by ESD (electrostatic discharges), cable discharge events, inductive switching, and other events. The SMA6L13A suppresses transients by diverting, clamping, or both diverting and clamping of damaging voltage spikes. Furthermore, the low inductance punch-through diode design allows a fast turn-off time, resulting in low levels of emitted noise. The device is offered in a small package size, yet featuring a low surge resistance.
Application Field
The SMA6L13A TVS is widely used for protection of ports, communications, and other applications, where the current requirements are typically from 2A to 5A. Typical applications include: data interfaces, LC/LU/SC/ST/FC connectors, SCSI ports, notebook computers, routers, hubs, Ethernet FTTX, PDAs, cellular phones, modems, video cameras, and portable health devices. Its ultra-small hidden form factor also allows it to be used in applications with limited board space.
Working Principle
SMA6L13A devices use a low capacitance, avalanche diode design to provide over-voltage protection of cables, ports, and other interface components. The device contains three diodes connected in series, each with a low capacitance between cathode and anode (typically 4pF). The device is normally in the off-state, i.e., it blocks the flow of reverse currents. When a voltage transient occurs, the device carries the current until the voltage reaches its breakdown voltage of 5V, at which point the device conducts current and clamps the voltage.
The low capacitance of these devices allow for fast turn-off times (typically <1ns), and they are capable of reduce cross-talk and emitted noise from cables and ports, thereby providing the best possible ESD protection. They are also polarization insensitive, and can be safely used with any polarity. The device offers low clamping voltage (@5V) and fast response time for reliable over-voltage protection.
SMA6L13A diodes are also designed with ESD immunity, making them ideal for applications that require protection from transient voltage spikes due to ESD and other causes. The diodes can withstand ESD strikes up to 16KV (HBM) without any damage.
