Working Principle
Single Zener Diodes offer exceptional protection for sensitive components when in reverse bias mode, allowing them to absorb and dissipate potentially damaging high-voltage transients. It works in the opposite fashion of a standard diode, allowing current to pass in the reverse direction when the voltage reaches a certain level. This is known as the Zener breakdown voltage, or Zener voltage, and is typically supplied as the “Vz” rating of the diode. The actual breakdown voltage, however, will depend on the particular diode design, the temperature, and probably other parameters that may affect the device\'s performance.
In typical applications, the diode will be connected in a reverse bias between two components. When the voltage exceeds the Zener voltage of the diode, it will begin to conduct and limit the total voltage to the breakdown value. It will safely prevent components from being damaged due to over-voltage. This is very useful in situations where high voltages may be present, such as in AC/DC converters and peak power power supply rectification, as well as in high-voltage protection circuits.
