SMCG10A-M3/9AT TVS - Diodes Application Field and Working Principle
TVS diodes are devices used to protect integrated circuits, circuit boards, and systems from stresses associated with Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). They are also often referred to as Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS), ESD Suppressors, or Transient Voltage Spike Suppressors. TransilTM SMCG10A-M3/9AT is one of such TVS diodes developed by STMicroelectronics.The SMCG10A-M3/9AT TVS diode integrates a protection diode and a Low Capacitance ESD protection device to protect digital ports and cables connected to the system from transients. The TVS diode\'s main operating range is 10 V to 15 V in unidirectional mode, and 5 V to 15 V in bidirectional mode. Its stand-off voltage is 12 V, and clamping voltage is 22 V. The main feature of the SMCG10A-M3/9AT is its extraordinary levels of ESD protection due to its high Peak Pulse Power capability. It can withstand up to 28 A in 8/20 µs pulse depending on device and application. This makes this device suitable for a wide range of applications including consumer electronic equipment, automotive systems, telecom systems, and industrial automation.In order to understand the working principle of this TVS diode, it is important to first understand the mechanisms of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). ESD typically occurs when two objects of opposite electric charge come in contact with one another. When this happens, electrical current passes between the objects and the voltage spike of the discharge can cause catastrophic damage to sensitive electronic devices.TVS diodes are designed to protect against such events by providing a very low resistance path for the ESD discharge to travel. These devices typically consist of a semiconductor junction diode, and, in the SMCG10A-M3/9AT case, with an additional low capacitance design layer. When an ESD event occurs, the diode is reverse biased, allowing the charge to flow through it and limiting the voltage spike across the circuit. The lower the capacitance, the faster the diode can react to reduce the peak voltage.
