SMCG36A-M3/9AT Application Field and Working Principle

TVS diodes, also known as Transient Voltage Suppressor diodes, are a kind of electronic component that is designed to protect sensitive electrical circuits from overvoltage transients, also known as ESD. The SMCG36A-M3/9AT is a TVS diode that is part of a series of TVS diodes manufactured by Zhejiang Maple.

The SMCG36A-M3/9AT is a small-sized, low-profile component that can fit in various applications. It is used to limit the incoming overcurrent and protect the system from catastrophic failure in scenarios involving high-energy transients such as those found in lightning strikes, turn-on surge, or electrostatic discharge. This is done by reducing the voltage or current through the diode, dissipating the excess energy, and acting as a “clamp”. The clamping voltage of the SMCG36A-M3/9AT is 360 volts.

The SMCG36A-M3/9AT series come in two different packages, the SMA and SMAJ with each symbol representing the power rating and working voltage of the particular device. The SMA has a Very Low rated power of 3.5 watts and a working voltage of −5Vdc to 175Vdc. The SMAJ on the other hand has a Low rated power of 9 watts and a working voltage of 350Vdc to 600Vdc.

The SMA and SMAJ packages also feature other electrical characteristics such as a junction capacitance of approximately 3pF for the SMA package and approximately 5pF for the SMAJ package. The junction capacitance can affect the response time of the diode, with the lower the junction capacitance giving faster response times. The SMCG36A-M3/9AT also has a fast acting clamping voltage and is able to dissipate large amounts of energy, even with its small size.
