TVS or Transient Voltage Suppressors are special types of diodes used in electronic circuits that protect against over-voltage transients. The SMF8.0A-T13 is a multi-functional, highly efficient, and cost effective overvoltage protection component that has many uses in a variety of different applications. The SMF8.0A-T13 TVS diode is capable of providing up to 2,400 Watts of peak pulse power with minimum leakage current. It is designed with a wide operating temperature range of -55 degrees Celsius and 150 degrees Celsius and is also rated for both high temperature long-term reliability and humidity.
The SMF8.0A-T13 provides excellent ESD protection and is compliant with the requirements of IEC 61000-4-2, IEC 60529, and ESDA7A. It is able to dissipate a vast amount of energy to protect sensitive electronic components against electrical overvoltage induced by inductive switching, power equipment failure, and external failures such as lightning or electrostatic discharge.
The operating principle of the SMF8.0A-T13 is quite simple. Its heavily doped junction helps produce a low impedance path that shunt quickly when the incoming energy exceeds the diode’s clamping voltage. When this happens, the recovery voltage is much lower than the reverse-biased voltage, thus protecting the connected components from major damage. This is why it is known as a “clamping” device.
