The SMF85A RQG (Reverse Quarter Geometry) is an advanced TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode which provides superior protection for sensitive electronics from electrical transients. It is suitable for protecting a wide range of semiconductor devices, such as microcontrollers, shift registers, crystal oscillators, memories, and power devices, as well as providing a failsafe protection for applications subjected to ESD (electro-static discharge).

The SMF85A RQG is designed using NXP Semiconductor’s advanced reverse quarter geometry (RQG) technology which enables the device to provide a much faster response time in comparison to other transient voltage suppressor diodes; it is also able to withstand higher working voltages up to 9V, as well as providing lower leakage current than most other TVS diodes.

The working principle of the SMF85A RQG is based on the concept of avalanche breakdown, which is a phenomenon that occurs when an electric current in a reverse-biased semiconductor device exceeds the breakdown level. This causes an avalanche of electrons to flow from the P-type to the N-type region, resulting in a rapid increase in the voltage across the junction. The SMF85A RQG will then clamp the input voltage to its breakdown voltage, thus preventing further voltage spikes and providing protection against any transient voltages that might otherwise damage sensitive electronic components.

The SMF85A RQG has many advantages over other TVS diodes.
