The SMM4F26A-TR TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diode is a silicon bidirectional device used to help protect vulnerable electronic systems components from electrical transients produced by inductive switching, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and lightning.

The TVS diode is designed to clamp spikes and surges to a safe level for the downstream component or device. Upon the application of a transient or surge, the TVS diode conducts current in proportion to the magnitude of the event, thus clamping the voltage appearing across the protection device. When the surge event is complete, the TVS device stops conducting and returns to its blocking state.

The SMM4F26A-TR specifically offers a high ESD protection level of up to 53kV contact discharges. With respect to inductive switching, SMM4F26A-TR can absorb a surge of up to 22A (8/20μs). Dynamic protection can be provided for a surge duration of up to 1μs. This makes the SMM4F26A-TR ideal for automotive and industrial applications as well as for other lesser protected devices including computers, modems, data terminals and other peripheral equipment.

The TVS diode is capable of absorbing high peak power at low applied voltages and of clamping voltages across its terminals at a safe level. Accordingly, the reverse breakdown voltage of the device is critical to its overall performance. The SMM4F26A-TR is specified at 26V in the operating conditions specified for the device.

The SMM4F26A-TR works by combining a large majority of the power of the transient surge into dissipated power lowered by the parasitic capacitance across the TVS anode-cathode junction. Residual energy not absorbed by the junction is further shunted away through a guard ring that connects the cathode to the anode. The anode is then connected to the system ground.

The SMM4F26A-TR is a SMD (Surface Mount Device) package designed to be automatically placed and soldered. The package size is 4.2 x 2.2 mm which allows for a lightweight solution ideal for mobile, industrial and automotive applications.
