Interface - Drivers, Receivers,Transceivers have been a critical and important part of any circuitry for many years. Though technology has grown more advanced, and more effective solutions found, the basic principles of how these components interact, and how they are used, is the same.

The SN75ALS160N is a 10-bit, high-speed BTL-compatible line receiver. It is designed to interface data and control signals between 5V compatible microprocessors and other 5V logic families. Its output stages can be wired to directly drive a optocoupler, BTL buffer, or similar buffers.

The SN75ALS160N has an open-emitter output stage configuration. Because of this, new logic families having input voltages >5V can be directly interfaced. This makes the SN75ALS160N suitable for interfacing various logic families operating from different supply voltages.

Working Principle: The SN75ALS160N acts as a buffer for microprocessors, allowing more current to be supplied to the microprocessors than would otherwise be possible. The use of the SN75ALS160N makes it possible for microprocessors to operate at higher clock speeds and consume less power, as the device takes over the task of providing power from the big master supply.

The SN75ALS160N contains two identical but opposite-polarity receiver blocks, both able to detect logic 0 or logic 1 levels. Each block contains an Earth-grounded input stage and an open-emitter output stage. A TTL input voltage applied to the input stage of receiver block results in the corresponding output level. That is, 0-level input produces 0-level output, and 1-level input produces 1-level output. The open-emitter output stage permits interfacing with BTL-compatible logic families. The signal transmitted from the open-emitter output stage is amplified before it reaches the destination logic family.
