SP485ECN-L/TR is a member of Exar’s SP485 family, a low power and low cost transceiver optimized for RS-485 communication. It is intended for use in office automation and industrial/building control surroundings that use the EIA485 standard for communication.
This transceiver is electrically compatible with all standard and half-duplex RS-485 transceivers, but it has some additional features that make it more attractive for many applications. It is able to reduce power to a stop-mode with a logic "low" on either DE or RE input while the supply circuit is still operational, and has a very low active power consumption during high speed operation.
Application Field
The SP485 is particularly suitable for instrumentation, industrial/building control and office automation applications that require robust and reliable communication over a long distance. It is designed for use in systems requiring multipoint communication such as point-to-point, multi-drop, and daisy-chain connections, and is electrically symmetrical to reduce the effects of noise, interference and reflections. Working Principle
Transmitting Mode
In the transmitting mode, the SP485ECN-L/TR enables the driver by providing a bias voltage to the output (VOH) and sets the driver to the desired logic level. The enabled output is then driven to the desired level. The driver also incorporates hysteresis to ensure distortion-free output.
In order to ensure that the enabled output is in the desired level, the SP485ECN-L/TR provides a power-on reset(POR) feature. The POR feature generates a reset signal to the driver circuitry and hold until the power supply voltage reaches the required minimum for full operation.
Receiving Mode
In the receiving mode, the SP485ECN-L/TR uses an analog comparator to detect the level of the incoming RS-485 signal. The analog comparator has a high speed response and can operate from low to high voltages. The comparator provides a logic level output to the logic inputs of the SP485ECN-L/TR. The logic output is compared with the state of the receiver enable (RE) and data enable (DE) pins to determine if the data is valid.
Sleep Mode
The SP485ECN-L/TR has a power saving mode in which it reduces the power consumption to a minimum by disabling the driver and receiver circuitry. A logic low on either DE or RE input will put the device into low power sleep mode. In this mode the driver circuitry is disabled and the receiver circuit is truncated, while the power supply remains enabled.
