SP6128ASEY-L Application Field and Working Principle

PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) refers to a special integrated circuit that combines power management functions such as voltage regulation, voltage conversion, voltage monitoring, voltage switching and power distribution. Voltage regulators are the most common type of PMIC, and have the function of stabilizing a DC voltage. DC DC switching controllers are a specialized type of voltage regulator which provide a high efficiency, low noise, adjustable output voltage for power sources such as batteries, solar cells, and fuel cells.The SP6128ASEY-L is a DC DC switching controller designed specifically for supplying power to cellular phone batteries and other portable consumer device batteries. This IC is a high efficiency, low noise, low standby current, and adjustable output voltage DC DC switching controller. It is designed to step down the data terminal\'s system voltage and adjust the output voltage, while maintaining the output voltage within the required range by controlling the ON/OFF cycle of the Load switch.The SP6128ASEY-L contains an internal switching device consisting of PWM and PFM ( Pulse Frequency Modulation) control logic, Under Voltage Lock Out circuit, Gain Error amplifier , temperature protection circuitry, and dual current limit circuits for both Buck and Boost operation. The controller includes a serial peripheral interface (SPI) for control of the output voltage, and also includes fault protection, over voltage protection and thermal shut down protection. In the PWM mode, the over-current condition is detected by measuring the voltage drop across the power MOSFET. The PWM control loop operates in an open loop configuration. When the output voltage reaches the desired level, the PWM cycle transitions to a low-duty cycle off time where the output voltage is monitored by the voltage error amplifier. If the output voltage drops below the desired level, the PWM cycle again transitions to a high-duty cycle on time. In the PFM mode, the internal error amplifier compares the output voltage to the voltage reference and adjusts the duty cycle as necessary to maintain the output voltage within the +/- 2% accuracy. This allows for very efficient operation with minimal stress on the power source. The PFM mode also incorporates a ripple reduction circuit to reduce ripple on the output voltage. This circuit stores the energy delivered by the inductor during the on-time of the switching cycle and supplies it during the off-time of the switching cycle, creating a continuous output voltage.The SP6128ASEY-L is ideal for applications where a high efficiency, low noise, adjustable output voltage is desired. The output voltage can be adjusted using the SPI interface. The PWM and PFM modes allow the user to select between an open loop feedback configuration or an error amplifier configuration. In addition, the integrated fault protection, over voltage protection, and thermal shut down protection ensures maximum safety and reliability under various operating conditions.
