PMIC - Supervisors such as the SP691ACT-L/TR, also referred to as voltage supervisors, are used for system monitoring and protection in various applications. The SP691ACT-L/TR is a micro-power precision supervisor which can monitor up to three supply voltages and issue an alert or reset signal when the voltage goes out of range. It is optimized for use in small form factor embedded systems.

This device provides extended monitoring capability, enabling it to monitor the system supply voltage, backup battery voltage, temperature sensor output and other analog inputs. For system supply monitoring, the supervisor can be configured to monitor voltage above or below a programmed threshold, as well as detect an undervoltage (UVLO) condition. The SP691ACT-L/TR can be programmed to operate in either a three-wire or a two-wire reset configuration, and it also has a power-on reset (POR) and a watchdog timer. The POR feature is designed to protect against brownout or power cycling conditions that could cause improper system startups.

Apart from monitoring voltage levels, the SP691ACT-L/TR also has an on-board temperature sensor which can be used to detect an over-temperature (OT) condition. The supervisor has an adjustable temperature trip point and can be configured to issue a reset or interrupt when a temperature threshold is exceeded. The supervisor also supports Programmable Brownout Recovery (PBR) which allows the device to reset itself after a brownout event and restore power-down protection.

The SP691ACT-L/TR features a low voltage detect (LVD) input which can be used to monitor an external analog input. The LVD will trigger a reset or interrupt on the host processor if the analog input falls below a threshold level. This feature can be used to monitor the voltage of a battery backup or other external analog signals.

The SP691ACT-L/TR incorporates an on-board digital-to-analog converter to drive the host processor’s reset pin. The supervisor can generate either an open-drain reset signal or an active-high interrupt signal based on its configured parameters. The output voltage and pulse width of the reset/interrupt can be programmed, and the output polarity can be inverted.

The SP691ACT-L/TR has low active and standby quiescent current consumption for extended battery life and also offers a wide input voltage range for operation in diverse applications. The device is housed in a tiny 3mm x 3mm, 8-lead LLP package and incorporates an internal bandgap reference. Additionally, it is supplied in a low power CMOS process which is designed to maximize performance while minimizing power consumption.
