Magnetic sensors, also called reed switches, are electromechanical components which detect the presence or absence of a magnetic field. When a magnetic field is present, the sensor passes a current and switches on or off depending on the field’s strengths. Magnetic sensors are widely used in a variety of industrial, medical and consumer applications and can detect both static and dynamic magnetic fields. The SS341RT is a popular single-pole, single-throw (SPST) reed switch, and an ideal choice for applications where a short-term magnetic field is needed.
The SS341RT reed switch is a miniature, sealed, low-force, single-pole, single-throw (SPST), passive component that is reliable, cost-effective, and easy to use. The SS341RT magnetically actuated reed switch has a highly magnetic windings, which allow for a low-current actuation of only 0.1 mA, making it well suited for applications requiring high-sensitivity and low power.
When used as a magnetic field switch, the SS341RT is actuated by a permanent magnet or equivalent magnetic force. When the actuating force reaches the threshold setpoint, which is approximately 0.7 Gauss in air, the switch closes and current starts to flow. When the actuating force is removed, the switch opens and current stops flowing. Depending on the application, the SS341RT can be configured as either normally closed (N.C.) or normally open (N.O.) contacts. The SS341RT is designed to withstand shock and vibration, so it’s well suited to industrial applications.
In addition to switching electric currents, the SS341RT can also be used as a proximity switch. The switch can detect when another magnetic device is near and trigger a warning alert or signal. This can be helpful in industrial and manufacturing applications as it allows the system to detect when parts are too close or out of order in an assembly line. The SS341RT can also be used in systems that rely on magnetic detection such as security doors, which prevent unauthorized entry.
