The SSL21083AT/1,118 is a PMIC - LED Driver which is used to control the current and power of an LED. It provides a voltage-mode current regulation loop that can drive up to 4 strings of LEDs, with each string up to 1W or 2.625A. The device operates in an asynchronous or synchronous buck mode, adjustable switching frequency, and adjustable device enable.

Working Principle

The SSL21083AT/1,118 consists of a controller, a power switch and a few passive components. The LED connected to the LED output terminal, which consists of a high-side current sense resistor (RS1). The switching frequency of the circuit is set with the external switching frequency compensation resistors (RES1 and RES2). The device draws pulses directly from the inductor and compares it to the voltage at the RCSRT pin to control the peak current and minimize the inductor ripple current.

The SSL21083AT/1,118 features a logic-level enable input for dimming the LEDs. The duty cycle is determined according to the voltage applied on the EN pin. When the voltage applied on the EN pin is less than 0.7V, the controller is fully enabled and allows the load to operate over the corresponding current level. When the voltage applied on the EN pin is more than 0.7V, the device is in maximum dimming mode, and the load current is limited to a minimum level.

The SSL21083AT/1,118 also features an integrated high-voltage Start-Up Regulator to automatically power the converter at start-up. This reduces noise on the power lines and allows the device to be powered on through narrow input voltage spikes. The device is available in a 2.571mm x 2.571mm x 0.838mm VQFN16 package.
