Working Principle

SSL22HR5G consists of two components – anode and cathode, connected to each other by an intrinsic P-N junction. The P-N junction involves a variety of physical phenomena such as forward bias and reverse bias, depletion region and minority carrier injection. It is these processes which allow the diode to conduct current in one direction, but not the other.

When voltage is applied forward bias, the depletion region width shrinks and a current path is formed. The electric field formed in the depletion region opposes the further increase of the voltage, thus limiting the current. This makes the SSL22HR5G support current polarity from anode to cathode, and at the same time blocking current in the reverse direction.

On the other hand, during reverse bias, the depletion region expands and a current path is blocked. Eventually, the reverse leakage current is reduced to minimum, making it suitable for high-sensitivity applications, for example, in an AC/DC power supply.
