The ST485ECDR is a dual differential receiver and transmitter which was designed forRS485 networks. These devices have been developed to deliver high levels of noise immunity along with excellent data rate capability. The ST485ECDR devices provide high-speed communications on noisy lines. They also provide a network termination option, allowing them to be used in bus-style networks.
The application field of the ST485ECDR device is primarily used inRS485 differential bus networks, with the transmitter typically driving twisted pair cables over distances up to 1200 meters. The ST485ECDR device is compatible with the widely-used EIA/TIA-485 (RS485) standard and is capable of providing a high-performance, low-power and cost effective solution for both new and legacy industrial automation installations.
Working Principle
The ST485ECDR device operates in a half-duplex mode. It accepts differential input signals and outputs differential signals. The incoming differential input signals are compared against a reference voltage to determine their logic level. If a valid logic level is not recognized by the receiver, an error is reported in the form of a flag which is set in the corresponding receiver buffer. The transmitter portion of the ST485ECDR device accepts a logic level input and converts it into differential output signals. The output signals can also be inverted logic level if required.
The ST485ECDR device provides a number of features which improve its reliability in the event of noise and electro-magnetic interference. The device provides differential drivers which are fully isolated from the receiver input, allowing it to reject common mode noise. The amplitude of the receiver input signals is also monitored to ensure that they remain within the specified range. If an over-voltage condition is detected, the device can be programmed to protect itself.
The ST485ECDR device is designed to be used in a wide range of applications including industrial automation, building automation, and process control networks.
