Tantalum capacitors make up a section of the electrolytic capacitor family that have recently become increasingly popular in many different electrical applications. TARR225K020 is a non-solid electrolytic capacitor specifically designed for use in high- and low-temperature applications. This particular capacitor utilizes tantalum foil and manganese dioxide as the dielectric and cathodic medium respectively.
This combination gives the TARR225K020 capacitor its impressive tolerance levels- from as low as -55°C to up to +85°C and a maximum voltage of 16V DC. The capacitance range runs from 1000 μF and below, making this particular capacitor ideal for situations where larger loads require higher voltages. Its high-rate performance, high endurance, and high dV/dt capabilities make it ideal for industrial and military applications.
The TARR225K020 capacitor works on a principle unlike other electrolytic capacitors. Its cathode and anode consist of a thin tantalum pellet and a manganese dioxide layer. The tantalum pellet, when charged, develops an oxide layer that deforms the oxide layer of the manganese dioxide. This increase in oxide layer thickness increases the capacitance of the capacitor and allows it to handle high current spikes efficiently. As current passes through the capacitor, the oxide layer of the manganese dioxide reduces in thickness, thus reducing the capacitance and limiting its ability to handle overloads.
The TARR225K020 capacitor provides the best of both worlds. Its temperature and voltage tolerance levels make it ideal for use in high-power and low-power applications, while its high dV/dt and high-rate performance make it suitable for high endurance applications.
