Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of capacitor that can often be found in consumer electronics and power supplies. The main feature that makes aluminum electrolytic capacitors stand out from other types is their extremely high capacitance values and the relatively low cost for manufacturing them. Compared to ceramic and film capacitors, aluminum electrolytic capacitors offer significantly higher capacitance values.

The TC492 is a specialized aluminum electrolytic capacitor that is designed to provide reliable performance in applications where larger electrolytic capacitors are impractical, such as medical and avionics systems. The TC492 is rated for operation at up to 50 volts and offers a capacitance of 4.7uf. It is a radial leaded device, with the leads spaced right in the center of the capacitor.

The TC492 has a low impedance and is designed to be reliable in temperatures between -55°C and 85°C. It is also commonly referred to as a Non-polarized capacitor, due to the fact that the leads are centered in the middle of the device and are not polarized. When a voltage is applied across the capacitor, electric charge is stored in the outer layer of the capacitor and is transferred to the inner layer through the electrolyte when the capacitor is discharged.

The capacitance of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is determined by the area of the two conductive plates and the distance between them, as well as the nature of the dielectric material. In the case of the TC492, the thin oxide layer is more permeable and provides a higher capacitance than other types of electrolytic capacitors. The wet electrolyte also further increases the capacitance, allowing the TC492 to reach its 4.7uf rating.

The TC492 is an ideal choice for applications that require reliable operation and tight tolerance. Its small size and high capacitance rating make it suitable for use in medical systems and avionics, as well as other applications where space and cost are limiting factors.
