Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of capacitor that utilizes an electrolytic as the dielectric. This case then houses an electrolyte, which is either manganese dioxide or polyester oil in the case of the TC54, a series of foil electrodes, and a separator material.The working principle of the TC54 series of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is straightforward. The device utilizes two internally separated electrical fields, which are formed by the foil electrodes and the electrolyte. When an electric potential is applied to the device, equal and opposite charges migrate to the internal electrodes across the separation material, causing a separation of charges. This charge separation creates a self-balancing electric field across the internal electrodes, which in turn creates an electric potential. This electric potential, in turn, creates a capacitive effect, which is used for energy storage and filtering.The TC54 series also utilizes two internal self-balancing capacitors, which are often referred to as “dual capacitors.” These capacitors are composed of two internal capacitors that are connected in series, with the positive terminal of the first capacitor connected to the negative terminal of the second capacitor. The combination of these two capacitors results in a higher total capacitance than a single capacitor. This allows for higher capacitance values in less space than would be achievable with a single capacitor.In addition, the internal construction of the TC54 ensures higher surge current capability than other aluminum electrolytic capacitors.
