Optoisolators, also known as optocouplers or photographs couplers, are optoelectronic components that are used to isolate electrically-coupled circuits, or reduce the coupling of signals from one area of a system to another. The most common type of optoisolator is the Transistor, Photovoltaic Output (TCET1101), which provides a high level of electrical isolation between the two sides.

The TCET1101 consists of a photodetector, a LED or Infrared emitting diode, and a transistor, all encapsulated in a plastic case. The photodetector is enclosed within the LED, which sends light to the photodetector when it is powered. The photodetector then turns the light into a current which is used to control the transistor. The transistor is then used to isolate or couple the two sides of the circuit.

The most common application of the TCET1101 is in voltage-level translation applications.
