Tantalum capacitors are electrochemical capacitors, also known as electrolytic capacitors, that consist of a tantalum anode and an electrolytic cathode. The capacitance of a tantalum capacitor is defined by the combination of the anode material, its surface area, and the cathode material. Specialized metal oxides are used to serve as the dielectric material between the two electrodes.The primary applications of tantalum capacitors are in power supplies where they, due to their low effective capacitance and equivalent series resistance (ESR), are ideal due to their ability to store energy and their ability to withstand extreme environmental conditions. The TCFGP1A225M8R capacitor is an ovoid, surface mountable tantalum bead capacitor that is available with a variety of cathode configurations that increase its versatility. This capacitor features a high capacitance to size ratio and is ideal for high voltage switching applications. It is an especially popular capacitor for many motor load and arc suppression applications due to its low ESR and high current ratings.The TCFGP1A225M8R capacitor has an oxide coating on its anode and a palladium cathode that has a polarized cathode construction. Its anode is constructed of tantalum powder which is pressed and sintered into a solid structure to form a porous anode surface which is then coated with tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5). This dielectric layer provides excellent dieletrical properties and exceptional temperature characteristics. The cathode is comprised of a palladium silver alloy in a clamped design that has an electrolyte encased between two surfaces that sandwich the anode and cathode layers. When voltage is applied to the TCFGP1A225M8R capacitor, its dielectric layer breaks down and forms capacitive plates that charge to the desired voltage levels. This process dissipates very little power, thus making it an ideal choice for applications where efficiency and power dissipation are important considerations.The TCFGP1A225M8R capacitor is also highly temperature tolerant and has a maximum temperature of 125°C, making it suitable for a wide range of environments.
