Optoisolators refer to a type of optoelectronic device used to provide electrical isolation between input and output, often used to protect sensitive electronics against potentially damaging electrical inputs that occupy different safety zones. The TCLT1114 belongs to the type of Optoisolator known as transmission coupled logic (TCL); this device utilizes a photocoupler, containing a light emitting diode (LED) and a photosensitive transistor, to provide the required electrical isolation. The photocoupler is the primary element responsible for providing isolation between the two circuits, as the LED emits light onto the photosensitive transistor, which produces an electrical signal. This signal is then used to drive the output circuit of the optoisolator.

The TCLT1114 optoisolator offers a high level of insulation voltage in excess of 1500V ac, which allows it to safely be used in challenging environments. It also has a maximum switching speed of 1.7Mhz and a surge voltage endurance rating of 4kV, making it an ideal choice for fast switching circuits and applications that need to be resistant to voltage spikes. The surface mounted package leads to a reduced board footprint, allowing for easy installation and integration into existing circuits. The TCLT1114 optoisolator is also available with a built-in Zener barrier diode and is capable of a low current operating state of 0.8mA.
