DC-DC converters, in particular the TEN 40-2434, are devices designed to convert electric energy into another, more suitable form. In particular, this device is designed to take an input of 12 to 24 volts DC, and output an output of 24 volts DC, as well as 40 watts. It is designed for specific applications such as powering medical equipment, instrumentation, signal handling, or other similar applications.The TEN 40-2434 utilizes a topology referred to as Isolated Flyback. In its most basic form, this topology consists of a transformer, an input diode, an output diode and a switching element (MOSFET in this particular device). Through the use of appropriate voltage sensing and control circuitry, this basic topology is able to output a regulated output voltage, irrespective of changes in the input voltage.The operation of the device can be broken down into five distinct steps:1. When the input voltage is greater than the output voltage, the MOSFET is switched on. This allows current to flow from the input to the primary winding of the transformer, and start storing energy into the transformer core.2. The stored energy in the transformer core is then slowly released back into the primary winding, with the direction of current flow being reversed due to the diodes present. This causes an increase in the current flowing in the primary winding, and a decrease in the voltage across the same winding.3. This decrease in voltage results in a decrease in the voltage across the MOSFET, which eventually causes the MOSFET to switch off. This breaks the circuit and stops the flow of current.4. The stored energy in the transformer now transfers to the secondary winding, in a higher voltage. This higher output voltage is then rectified, filtered, and regulated to arrive at the desired output voltage. 5. The process is then repeated for the next cycle. The TEN 40-2434 is designed to have a minimum stress on its components. To achieve this, it uses a soft switching scheme. Instead of directly switching the MOSFET off, a discharge period is observed. During this period, a secondary winding is used to slowly discharge the energy stored in the transformer core and to reduce the voltage across the primary winding to zero, before the MOSFET is switched off. This helps in increasing the life of the components. In addition to its built-in protection circuitry, the device also has several other features which make it suitable for many applications. The device is designed to be used in an open frame (without additional shielding), has no galvanic isolation, and features an adjustable output voltage that can be set up to 24V DC. The TEN 40-2434 is a compact, reliable and efficient solution for applications that require conversion from 12 and 24 volts DC up to 24 volts DC, with 40watts of output power.
