Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
THA402M040AC0C is a type of Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor which is composed of aluminum foil, paper, and electrolyte. It is made by combining an anode foil with an electrolyte-soaked paper and a cathode foil. The anode foil serves as an electrode and is rolled up with the paper and the cathode foil is then rolled around the other two and laminated together.
Like other aluminum electrolytic capacitors, THA402M040AC0C have the highest capacitance per unit volume of any available capacitor, and also have the highest working voltage among all capacitors, which makes them suitable for the most demanding applications. In addition, they have the longest life span compared to other capacitors, typically 5 to 10 years. The wide temperature range also makes them suitable for a variety of applications.
Application Field
The most typical application of the THA402M040AC0C is high frequency filtering circuits and general-purpose dc, power-supply filtering, ripple current filtering, and dc link application in an electricity circuit. It can be used in the input-and output-filtering stages of switching and linear amplifiers used in a wide range of electronic applications. This type of capacitor can also be found in high-performance computers, audio equipment, power supplies, and other power-oriented devices such as power sources, reactors, and converters.
Working Principle
A basic aluminum electrolytic capacitor functions through a process in which two metal electrodes are separated from each other, yet electrically connected by an electrolyte. The anode of the capacitor is normally made from aluminum foil that is coated with an electrolyte and connected to a lead that acts as a terminal. The cathode is typically made of foil as well, and is laminated to the anode and the separator layer, which is usually made of paper or plastic to physically separate the positive and negative electrodes. A dielectric oxide layer is formed on the anode, and when a voltage is applied between the electrodes, charge carriers, usually anions from the electrolyte, are attracted through the oxide layer and form an electric double layer at the interface.
This double layer stores charge, and when it is polarized, electrons (the charge carriers) are attracted to the anode and anions are attracted to the cathode, creating a potential difference across the oxide layer. This polarization phenomenon is the basis of capacitance. It stores electrical charge and when the voltage difference between the two plates decreases, current will flow through the electrolytic capacitor and the charges stored will be released.
Therefore, the THA402M040AC0C aluminum electrolytic capacitor works similar to other electrolytic capacitors, with the main difference being the dielectric material (oxide layer). Due to the co-electrolyte-soaked paper and cathode foil, it is able to store more charge and has a higher working voltage. It also has a longer lifespan compared to other capacitors.
