Thyristors - TRIACs are components that regulate electrical currents in electronic circuits from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). They are used in a variety of electronic circuit applications, from industrial, consumer and home appliances to circuits used for communication and entertainment. The TIC206D-S is a type of thyristor-TRIAC that is used for controlling AC power, mostly for switching and dimming control.

The TIC206D-S thyristor-TRIAC is a three-terminal device. The terminals are designated "M", "G" and "T" which stand for Main, Gate and Trigger respectively. The Main terminal is connected to the AC line and the other two terminals are utilized to control the amount of power transferred through the device when triggered. The TIC206D-S has two ways of controlling the amount of current through the device when triggered. The current can be controlled with a “phase control” or “zero crossing” mode. In “phase control” mode, the current can be controlled before it reaches its peak value. This is accomplished by applying the gate voltage at a specific instant of the half-cycle. In the “zero crossing” mode, the current can be switched on or off at exactly the zero crossing of the AC line. This is because the trigger signal to the TIC206D-S is delayed and synchronized with the zero crossing of the line.

In addition to being used in AC power control applications, the TIC206D-S can also be used in motor speed control. It can also be used to control rectifiers and filters that are used to convert AC power to DC power. It is versatile enough to be used in a variety of applications, from consumer electronics to industrial power control systems.
