The TIP42C is a silicon epitaxial-base NPN power transistor in a TO-220 Plastic package. It is designed for use in general-purpose amplifier and switching applications. It is particularly suitable for use in transformerless power supply, DC to DC converter, relay driver and motor control.

The TIP42C transistor features low collector-emitter saturation voltage and high DC current gain. It has four leads that provide better conduction and improved heat dissipation. The leads are connected to the base, emitter, and collector elements respectively.

The TIP42C transistor has a huge continuous collector current rating of 6.0A and a high peak power rating of 85W. The collector current is determined by the amount of base current supplied to the transistor. Increase in the base current increases the collector current, while decrease in the base current reduces it.

In cut-off mode, the reverse inter-base bias voltage is increased which cuts off the collector current. This occurs when the bias voltage is more than 0.7V. When the bias voltage is reduced, the collector current starts to flow again.
