This is known as the avalanche breakdown. When the breakdown occurs, the TISP61521DR-S switches to the connecting point from an OFF-state to an ON-state.
The TISP61521DR-S has two distinct parts. The anode terminal, which is the positive voltage terminal, and the cathode terminal, which is the negative voltage terminal. The anode terminal is connected to the power source, while the cathode terminal is connected to the load. When an external voltage is applied to the anode terminal, a reverse bias is created across the diode of the TISP61521DR-S. This reverse bias applies the necessary voltage for the breakdown phenomenon to occur in the diode. As the current through the device intensifies, the diode begins to “breakdown” or switch to the connecting point between the anode terminal and the load.
Once the switching state of the device is reached, the device will remain in this state until the applied voltage has dropped below the breakdown voltage. At this point, the diode of the TISP61521DR-S will begin to “recover” to its initial OFF-state. Through the cycle of switching and recovery, the TISP61521DR-S can be used as an effective current switch for high current load switching applications.
