Switching DC-DC controllers are widely used in numerous consumer, industrial and automotive power applications. The TL5001ACDR is one such DC-DC switching converter offered by TI that is used for different applications. It is a hybrid analogue-digital controller that can accuracely control switching converters of various topologies with cycle-by-cycle current limit and built-in under-voltage protection. Working Principle
The TL5001ACDR works when no external power is required to drive the output switches. As an internal charge pump charges up, the voltage is compared with a precision reference voltage. If the voltage is equal to or greater than the reference voltage, a latch turns on the output switch and cycles start.
To obtain the fast transient response and inherent safety features, the TL5001ACDR adds a dual-loop architecture to the switching converter. This dual-loop architecture consists of an outer loop for the output voltage regulation and an inner loop for the current sense limit. Both loops are designed to respond quickly to changing conditions, such as overloads or short circuits, in order to provide reliable and accurate operation.
The output voltage loop consists of a transconductance amplifier and an error amplifier with a band gap reference voltage. A feedback voltage setpoint is compared with the actual output voltage by the error amp, and any error is amplified to the transconductance amp. The transconductance amp is used to drive the output switch in the desired direction.
The current sense limit loop is an integral part of the switching cycle. An internal current limit is monitored continually at the input of the switches in order to provide cycle-by-cycle current limit and at the same time, provide a built-in over temperature protection. The voltage comparison to the reference voltage is also checked to provide over-voltage protection.
