The TL5001CD is a synchronous buck controller designed to supply a voltage regulated output to power an application. It is a DC/DC controller offering high efficient and is capable of providing up to 20A of output current. The TL5001CD is a monolithic integrated circuit that includes all of the necessary features to regulate a buck converter application. It features an adjustable output voltage and features over current protection, thermal shutdown, soft start, and over voltage protection.

Working Principle

The TL5001CD synchronous buck controller converts a voltage from a DC input source to a much lower regulated output voltage. It does this by using a series of switches connected in a buck topology. The switch of the regulator is driven by an internal oscillator which provides precise timing signals to the gates of the switches. The voltage is regulated by adjusting the pulse width of the switch. A current sense resistor in the output circuit allows the controller to sense the output current, which is then compared against an adjustable preset current limit value. If the current limit is exceeded, the controller shuts off the switch and the output voltage falls.

The TL5001CD also includes thermal protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection, and soft-start features. The thermal protection will shut down the switch when the junction temperature rises above a preset temperature limit. The over-current protection will shut down the switch if the sense current rises above a predetermined value. The overvoltage protection will shut down the switch if the output voltage exceeds an adjustable preset limit. The soft-start mode will slowly ramp up the output voltage at power up.
