The TL5002CD is a two-stage DC to DC switching controller specifically designed for the small footprints, low input voltage and high efficiency requirements of laptop computers and other portable systems. It is ideal for use in notebook power supplies, adapter power supplies, and a range of battery powered applications. This device offers a wide range of features, including high speed response, low voltage shutdown, low current standby/sleep mode capability, current limiting, as well as over temperature protection.

Working Principle

The TL5002CD operates by taking the input low voltage, either from the battery or from the charger, and by outputting a higher voltage as necessary. This is done by taking advantage of the switching action of the two switches. Each switch controls two transistors, a P-channel for conduction on the high side, and an N-channel for conduction on the low side. When the switches are triggered, the P-channel transistor is connected to the low side and the N-channel is connected to the high side. Which will result in a voltage boost.

The TL5002CD integrates control circuits that sense input and output voltages, current, and temperature to efficiently regulate converter losses and maintain the converter in a safe operating environment in compliance with power supply safety rules.

The TL5002CD also includes a current limiting circuit to limit the peak switch current; an over temperature detection circuit with automatic recovery to protect the device in case of over temperature; a low voltage shutdown circuit to disconnect the output voltage; and an adjustable soft-start circuit to reduce inrush current when the converter starts up.
