Optoisolators or optical isolators are used to prevent electrical noise and spikes from entering a sensitive electronic circuit. Issues such as unwanted ground loops, noise, and power transients can be mitigated by utilizing optoisolators with a Transistor, Photovoltaic Output (TLP185).
The operation of a TLP185 has three main elements. The optoisolator contains a LED, infrared or visible depending on the application. The light created by the LED activates a photosensitive element, which is typically a photodiode. This element causes a current to flow through a phototransistor. The light causes the phototransistor to turn on and off, thus controlling the electrical path of the circuit.
TLP185 is a generally used optoisolator device which is isolation-amplified by its output phototransistor. It has a low power consumption drive, making it ideal for battery powered applications. The output element of this device is an NPN phototransistor. The main operating voltage range of this device is 2V~24V and the output current capability is up to 50mA.
The maximum permissible input reverse current of a TLP185 is 1µA, thereby allowing very low level inputs. The rise time and fall time of TLP185 is less than 1µs, which makes it suitable for applications with high speed signal processing. The light absorption distance of this device is 25mm, and the insulation withstand voltage is 1600Vrms. It also provides reverse voltage protection up to 20V.
The phototransistor inside of TLP185 is able to open and close its own electrical path according to the LED’s light intensity. The LED is responsible for turning the transistor to the on or off state. When the LED emits light, the phototransistor will be in the on state allowing a current to flow, while in the absence of light, the transistor will be in the off state.
