Transzorb devices, commonly known as transient voltage suppressors (TVSs), are special purpose diodes designed to protect electronic circuits from damage due to electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical transients, and over-voltage conditions. These devices are used to absorb and dissipate energy by providing a very low impedance in both directions from the signal line. In this way, they protect the unprotected circuit from high electrical spikes.
The TLP33CA is a unidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) that is used to protect semiconductor devices from voltage transient surges. It is a low-capacitance, 400 W short pulse surge handling device which is specifically designed for applications such as high speed data transmission and telecommunications lines. It operates in two modes: bi-directional limiting and unidirectional clamping.
The TLP33CA has a very low capacitance of 0.27 pF in relation to other transient voltage suppressors, which makes it ideal for high speed data transmission. It has a very low clamping voltage (11.9 V) and can dissipate up to 400 W of power. It also has an ultra low operating capacitance, which improves its performance in transient situations. The TLP33CA basically operates by using a reverse-biased Zener diode. When a voltage transient or surge higher than the Zener breakdown voltage is applied to the device, the Zener diode becomes forward-biased and current flows through the diode. This current is limited by the transistor. The energy that is dissipated is mostly converted into heat and is conducted away by the device’s case. This process limits the current and dissipates the transient voltage.
The working principle of the TLP33CA is comprised of three main components: a Zener diode, a transistor, and an integrated resistor. The Zener diode and the resistor form a voltage divider which provides the breakdown voltage of the device. The breakdown voltage of the device is determined by the “on-state” voltage of the Zener diode and the resistor value. When a surge voltage is applied to the TLP33CA, it forms a short circuit between the two terminals and the transistor will start to conduct current. This current will be limited by the resistor and dissipated mainly as heat.
The TLP33CA is widely used for protection against transient voltage surges and in high speed data transmission systems. It is a very useful device that is capable of protecting many electronic circuits from damage due to voltage transients.
