Optoisolators are among the most important components for both industrial and consumer electronics. In an optoisolator, an LED is on one side and a photodetector on the other. Light emitted from one is detected by the other permitting two circuits to be electrically isolated from each other, allowing only a current to flow. The Transistor & Photovoltaic Output type of optoisolator, commonly referred to as the TLP385, is specific to industrial switching applications but also offers advantages in consumer electronics.
The optoisolator TLP385 is a small 4-pin device with a Darlington output. The Darlington output of the TLP385 consists of two transistors, connected in a distinct topology. This enables the output transistor to have an extremely high output current—up to 800 mA—making it a better choice for most switching situations.
The TLP385 uses a simple LED light source as the input. The LED is connected to the input pin, and when a 5–10V supply is applied, the LED emits light. This light is then directed to the output via a lens and optical filter. The TLP385 is engineered with a photo-sensitive output, so any amount of light will trigger the output transistor, varying the current that passes through. This allows the TLP385 to act as a switch, detecting light levels and controlling current.
In terms of application fields, the TLP385 optoisolator can be used in a large array of electronics from industrial, to commercial, and consumer. Its highest performance output makes it perfect for powering devices with a high current, while its versatility also permits it to be used in applications such as motor control, audio output switching, and automotive circuitry.
The TLP385’s photovoltaic output is one of its most prominent features. This output enables the TLP385 to draw electrical power from the light emitted from the LED source. This power is then converted to an electrical signal and sent to the output transistor which is activated, thus amplifying the current that passes through the device.
The TLP385 also contains an internal optical filter, which may be adjusted in order to allow specific wavelengths of light to pass through. This feature, combined with the ability to draw power directly from the LED source to activate the output, makes the TLP385 an ideal choice for a variety of applications.
