Solid State Relays
Solid State Relays (SSRs) are a type of electrical switch whose operation is based on the semiconductor technology, which are generally used to control large currents. TLP3555(F) is an opto-coupler type solid state relay which is suitable for AC loads control.
TLP3555(F) Application Field

TLP3555(F) Working Principle

The output part incorporates a triac with a gate and a snubber circuit. The output device is triggered in two ways, either using the zero-cross technique or the phase-angle control technique. The zero-cross technique is used when the resistive load needs to be switched on and off at zero-cross frequency, while the phase-angle control technique is used when the application needs dimming effects. The output voltage’s polarity is opposite to that of the input voltage.
In the zero-cross technique, the LED in the input part will emit a light beam when the input phase reaches the zero-cross level. The optical coupler will receive the light beam and will generate a signal, which will activate the gate of the output part. Since the output part is a Triac, it will switch on and off with the zero-cross frequency. The intensity of the output voltage depends on the input voltage. The output device will switch off when the input voltage goes below the zero-cross level.
The phase-angle control technique is quite similar to the zero-cross technique, with the difference being that the switching occurs when a certain phase angle (generally ranging from 0-90 degrees) is reached instead of the zero-cross level. This technique is ideal for controlling dimming applications by controlling the power given to the load. The intensity of the output voltage depends on the input voltage and the phase angle.
