TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) diodes are used to protect underground cables from overvoltage transients generated by lightning, electrostatic discharge, switching transients and other events. In order to achieve this high voltage protection, diode manufacturers have developed a range of specialized diodes, such as the popular 1.5KE36A.

1.5KE36A Application Field

The 1.5KE36A diode is widely used in all kinds of fast-transitioning electronic circuits, circuit boards, power supplies and telecommunications systems. It is designed to protect telecommunication systems, undersea cables and electronic circuits from the hazard of overvoltage transients generated by lightning, electrostatic discharge and switching transients.

The 1.5KE36A diode has a sharp response and is capable of suppressing voltage transients from up to 5KA (Kilo Amps). 1.5KE36A Working Principle

The 1.5KE36A diode is an non-linear voltage device which operates based on the avalanche breakdown effect. The avalanche effect occurs when large electric fields are applied to the junction of a diode. These fields cause a point of high electric field across the junction. This then leads to an increase in current which can cause the diode to break down.

When the 1.5KE36A diode is exposed to an overvoltage transient, the avalanche breakdown phenomenon will occur and it will begin to conduct current.
