Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) introduced its TPS2376DDAR-H, the first 3-port Power over Ethernet (PoE) Type H power supply controller. TI is an American technology company that designs and manufactures semiconductor and electronics equipment for customers worldwide. It is the market leader in power management products.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) controllers are devices that deliver power over an Ethernet physical layer, making it unnecessary to provide a separate power supply to the powered device in the network architecture. PoE is advantageous since it consolidates the wiring in the network infrastructure, reduces system complexity and cost, and allows flexible deployment of powered devices in the network.

The TPS2376DDAR-H is part of PoE controllers incorporated in the TI portfolio of power management products. The key features of the chip are a 3-port interface option, dynamic Type H detection, diagnostics and control, IEEE 802.3at Type 1 compliance, and fault blocking under current detection and thermal shut-down.

The TPS2376DDAR-H has three ports for data and power delivery. The ports can be configured for either data-only or full PoE operation. The chip operates in one of two topologies - Endspan or Midspan - that determine the placement of the PoE power source in the physical infrastructure. The chip is able to support up to 25.5W of power to the powered device.

The TPS2376DDAR-H is designed with a three-step device detection process that properly identifies the presence of the powered device and its power requirements. The chip samples the voltage waveform at the port to detect whether the device is of Type H. If no device is detected, the port is set back to data-only operation. The chip then requests class based-power status from the powered device. This is followed by a current control loop, which dynamically adjusts the output current limit to match the power requirements of the powered device.

The chip also provides diagnostics to help identify the condition of the port, the powered device and the power source. The status of the port is indicated via an LED for proper visual indication. If the temperature of the chip exceeds a certain threshold, the chip shuts down, thus protecting the system from further damage due to overheating.

The TPS2376DDAR-H includes a programmable GPIO to allow system control and event detection. An integrated watchdog timer is provided to continuously monitor the system activity and reset it if an unexpected event occurs. The chip is also designed to detect faults under current, over voltage, and short circuit conditions and to react accordingly. The chip also supports various Ethernet-related features such as flow control and proprietary signaling.

The TPS2376DDAR-H provides a complete solution for powering and managing Type H powered devices over an Ethernet physical layer. This chip is intended to be used in any application requiring PoE power delivery or management. Such applications include industrial networks such as manufacturing, process and building automation, as well as consumer networks such as audio and home automation.
