TPS2491DGS

The TPS2491DGS is a Hot Swap Controller from Texas Instruments’ family of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs). Targeted for telecommunications and data communication applications, the TPS2491DGS provides a safe, power-fail-proof, controlled inrush for Hot Swap systems. An ideal solution for systems needing circuit protection and configuration, it eliminates the necessity for added fuses and/or resistors in a Hot Swap system, allowing for greater design flexibility.

The TPS2491DGS features a fast start-up time and accurate system-level protection. Highly integrated and low current, the device monitors the voltage supply rail and current in a rack or shelf, controlling inrush current with an internal timer. When the voltage is applied to the board, the device turns on external power MOSFETs, once their thresholds are met, to allow a controlled inrush of current to the board. It also monitors FET temperature and current levels, providing overload protection and preventing out-of-regulation current.

To ensure safe board-level operation, the TPS2491DGS includes unique features such as Programmable Overvoltage Protection (OVP), powering down a board before an overvoltage condition occurs, and Fast Current Monitoring OVP, for keeping the current in the system at a set level, to avoid problems such as excessive power dissipation. An accurate Undervoltage Lockout (UVLO) prevents damage from overloading and protects the system from being power cycled too often.

The TPS2491DGS is ideal for communications systems and performs extremely well in harsh environments. It can also help reduce noise, as it minimizes current ringing on the bus, reducing voltage transients.
