TPS2420RSAT Application Field and Working Principle

The TPS2420RSAT is a Hot Swap controller used to provide safe power regulation and debugging of systems. It is part of Texas Instruments’ Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC-Hot Swap Controllers). This device is mainly intended for use in hot-insertion and hot-extraction applications, as it protects load and power-supply circuits and improves system reliability.

This device provides protection in applications operating with power supplies up to 24V, including high-density printed-circuit board (PCB) assemblies. It has a maximum internal power dissipation of 460mW and typical on-resistors of 250mΩ (Vin=3.3V). In addition, it has a low quiescent current consumption of typically 16μA.

Working Principle

The TPS2420RSAT Hot Swap controller works by monitoring the input voltage and regulating the output. It limits the current that can flow through the switch while also providing protection against over-voltage, reverse voltage and over-temperature conditions. The internal current limit is set by an external resistor and is monitored by the integrated sense amplifier.

The TPS2420RSAT Hot Swap controller also features a gate driver that is capable of driving an external P-channel MOSFET. The low on-resistance of the integrated Hot Swap Switch provides short circuit protection. The device is also protected from ESD and EMI spikes.

The integrated heat sink allows the device to operate at high temperatures without overheating. The integrated gate driver does not require any external bias voltage and runs off the same ground as the sense amplifier for easy implementation.
