PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers
The TPS24711DGSR is a dual-channel Hot Swap controller, designed to allow safe in- and out-sourcing of an application card from a live system without direct risk of damage to the end system or the application card. The device provides two separate black-box solutions with user-selectable override signals, independent onboard current and voltage monitoring, and fault indication. It is intended for applications such as servers, storage, networking, and telecom.

Working Principle
The TPS24711DGSR is composed of two Hot Swap channels, two power monitoring circuits, and two fault indication signals. Each Hot Swap channel provides bidirectional current sense, power path control, power-good, and over-temperature/overcurrent protection. Through an external resistor, the overcurrent protection threshold (MAX IN LOAD) can be set, therefore providing application-dependent load protection.
Disconnection and in-rush current limiting are guaranteed by the Hot Swap controller’s internal switch architecture. The controller can survive short high current pulses and the supply-on level is configured through the upper or lower threshold levels. The upper and lower threshold levels can also be used to enable over-temperature detection. Both Hot Swap channels support adjustable hold-off time or disconnection time for power/load voltage protection.
The power monitoring circuits provide a shunt-based precision current sense solution and a monitor of a system power rail. The power monitoring circuits monitor the supplied current and feed information to a system via an analog voltage output. They can also be used to detect when the system power rails fall below the preset threshold. Additionally, they can be used to detect voltage transients (i.e., when a module is disconnected or returns online).
The two fault indication signals (stat pin and fault indicator pin) are used to indicate faults including over-temperature and overcurrent. The stat pin can be used to enable or disable the fault indicator pin. The fault indicator pin can be an open-collector as a logic output, an external resistor at overcurrent, or an open-drain with an active pullup as an analog output with the supply-on feature.
The TPS24711DGSR Hot Swap controllers provide the necessary protection and control to allow the safe in- and out-sourcing of an application card from a live system without the risk of damage.
