A variety of electronic components, systems and products require a voltage or current reference source or supervisor circuit. The TPS3513N is one such PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) designed to clamp or switch various types of state conditions and power sources to output power loads. It is among the most common category of supervisory ICs found in consumer products.

The TPS3513N PMIC supervisor is a voltage monitoring device with adjustable watchdogs, reset debounce, and output voltage control. It is offered in a 16-pin DIP package that includes an adjustable reset, an open-drain power-ON reset, a reset debounce, and active-HIGH or low reset. The TPS3513N includes an adjustable fixed voltage detector with an active-LOW reset to the host processor. The reset debounce is adjustable from 3 to 40 milliseconds and offers better protection against false reset conditions.

The maximum voltage applied to the VDD pin is slightly above 5.0 V, while the maximum source and sink currents are typically 0.5 amps and 0.2 amps, respectively. The TPS3513N is also Polarity Protection capable and offers reverse voltage protection. In addition, it features a thermal protection circuit that switches off the output when it exceeds the safe temperature limit.

The TPS3513N PMIC supervisor is ideal for low-voltage applications such as embedded systems or power distribution systems. These systems often require an adjustable reference voltage that can monitor battery voltage, voltage rail levels, current loads, and control functionality. The TPS3513N is especially applicable to automotive infotainment, security, as well as within embedded processing systems and smart metering applications.

In terms of its working principle, the TPS3513N monitors voltage rise and fall levels, individually, through its two adjustable voltage detectors, VIN_LOW and VIN_HIGH. When the supply voltage drops either below the VIN_LOW threshold or rises above the VIN_HIGH threshold, the PMIC will issue a reset signal, active-Low during VIN_LOW crossing and active-High when VIN_HIGH is crossed. The reset remains until the voltage is within the vin_low/vin_high limits. It will also re-assert if the sense input continually crosses either limits, as long as the reset remains active.

The TPS3513N also features a short-term reset delay (RBP) which is adjustable between 3 and 40 milliseconds in order to protect the host processor from false reset conditions. As such, the reset is delayed long enough to ensure that the system has stabilised and the processor can adequately power up. The power-ON reset is triggered when the supply voltage, VDD, rises above typically 1.6 V and ensures that the processor is power-TO after an initial turn-on.

To summarise, the TPS3513N is an adjustable voltage monitoring PMIC intended for low-voltage applications that require a multi-functional supervisor circuit. It offers a wide range of functions including adjustable watchdogs, reset debounce, output voltage control and polarity protection, thermal protection and power-ON reset. It provides superior protection against false reset and is particularly suitable for automotive infotainment and embedded processing systems, as well as smart metering applications.
