Working Principle

The TPS40060 is a high-efficiency, synchronous DC-DC controller that provides a highly programmable current-mode, voltage-mode, or peak-current-mode topology with five operating modes to support a wide range of power applications. The TPS40060 consists of an operational amplifier, a driver, a voltage reference, reference divider, an oscillator, and multiple control and protection functions. The part uses an internal digital controller to accurately monitor and control the voltage, current or frequency of the buck, boost or SEPIC converter circuit.

The TPS40060 employs a pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme for converter control. The controller includes an output voltage regulator and feedback comparator. When the regulated output voltage deviates from its target value by a predetermined level, the feedback comparator will cause the controller to change the duty cycle of the PWM signal.

Additional features include an over-voltage protection (OVP) circuit, soft-start, and under-voltage lockout (UVL), which are used to ensure the safe operation of the power system. The device is supplied in a lead-free, halogen-free, 8-pin 3x2mm TDFN package.
