Working Principle

TPS40304DRCT works on the principle of Step-Down Regulation. It is a switching regulator that uses a power MOSFET as the main switching element. When the input voltage exceeds the output voltage, the input voltage passes through the MOSFET, then passes through an inductor, before the output voltage is yielded. The MOSFET then turns off and the output voltage of the inductor is regulated by the diode connected over the inductor in series. The output voltage is then given from the capacitor connected over the input voltage source.

The step-down operation is controlled by an internal control circuit. The control circuit uses current mode PWM technique and can switch on-off times at a frequency up to 1 MHz. It is also used to perform synchronization of the device with external clocks by having the PWM oscillator frequency synchronized to the external clock. The control circuit is then coupled with a MOSFET gate driver, wherein gate driver provides the needed switching speed and gate drive voltage for the MOSFET to make sure that the current flow is interfered with minimum possible.
