TPS40195PWRG4 is a DC-DC switching controller designed to reduce the complexity of digital power system design while allowing greater power efficiency and superior flexibility. The device combines DC-DC external MOSFET switching, digital control, and power supply monitoring functions into a single 6-pin solution. Working Principle

The TPS40195PWRG4 has two operating modes – Burst Mode® operation (BM) and Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) operation. During BM operation, the device modulates the active low enable control signal with a Ramp Clock waveform to supply the output voltage. BM mode operation allows the DC-DC converter to maintain output current with minimum input power. During CCM operation, the enable pin generates a pulse width modulation waveform to constantly supply current to the output. This allows for stepping down voltage at high-current loads in a very efficient manner.

The TPS40195PWRG4 is designed to control external N- and P-channel MOSFETs that drive the power stage. Additionally, the device includes an analog output pin (DIM) to adjust the output voltage and an internal over-temperature shutdown feature for over-current protection. The device can be used in either a buck or boost topology, and is capable of controlling peak currents up to 10A.
