The TPS70348 is a robust power regulator which implements a low dropout voltage regulation scheme. Functionality
The functional diagram of the TPS70348 (Figure 1) provides an overview of the features included in this device. Basically, the TPS70348 offers a single output regulated voltage (Vout) which is regulated by an input voltage (Vin) and a wide range of control signals (EN, PGOOD, RESET, TS, MODE and PMODE). In addition to these features, the TPS70348 integrates a 3.2A high-side switch and a low-side switch that can be used to deliver a regulated power supply at a variety of output voltages (3V to 28V) and an adjustable ground (GND). The device also features an internal energy management block to improve power efficiency, as well as an auto-discharge circuit for battery backup applications.
Working Principle
The working principle behind the TPS70348 is based on a pass device architecture. This architecture allows the total dropout voltage to be consistent, regardless of the load current. At the heart of the device lies an NMOS transistor which is connected between the input and the output of the power supply, called the pass device. The output voltage is regulated and controlled by a feedback loop that drives a voltage regulator. This feedback loop is similar to a conventional buck regulator.
The process begins when the input voltage is applied and the voltage regulator turns on the pass device. This process raises the voltage at the output voltage terminal and activates the voltage feedback loop. As the output voltage increases, it is compared with a reference voltage and when it exceeds the reference voltage, the feedback loop commands the drive circuit to reduce the amount of current flowing through the pass device. The current reduction forces the output voltage to stabilise and reach the reference voltage, thereby providing the regulated voltage.
The TPS70348 provides a low dropout voltage power regulator which is suited for applications that require a robust, low noise and cost-competitive product that supports a wide range of output voltages from 3V to 28V. The device integrates an adjustable ground, high-side and low-side switches for an adjustable output, as well as other features for an energy efficient power management and a battery backup system.
