Block Diagram

The block diagram of the TPS71712DCKRG4 is shown in the following figure. It contains a voltage reference, an error amplifier and an output driver. The reference sets the nominal output voltage, while the error amplifier compares the output voltage with the reference voltage. The difference between the two voltages is amplified and drives the output driver. The output driver then adjusts the voltage in order to maintain the set point.

Working Principle

The TPS71712DCKRG4 operates in two modes: below a preset current threshold, the device will run in low-noise mode, and above that level, it will enter dropout regulation mode. In low-noise mode, the internal reference voltage feeds the amplifier which is then used to compare the output voltage with the reference voltage. Depending on the difference between the output and reference voltages, the output driver adjusts the voltage in order to maintain the output voltage. The dropout mode is enabled when the output current reaches a predetermined level and the device is forced into a dropout mode to prevent over-current conditions. In dropout state, the amplifier drives the output driver to lower the output voltage in proportion to the load current.

The TPS71712DCKRG4 also features short-to-battery protection and no-load power shutdown. During short-to-battery conditions, the device allows current to flow through the output driver in order to protect the load. The no-load power shutdown feature disables the output driver and reduces operational power when there is no load connected to the output.
